You were your own man and never listened to anything we said, but we were the best of buddies.

At home you were a fearless guarddog, affectionate and playful. You stole our stuff to make us chase you.

You had a zest for life and turned every walk and every outing into a new adventure. You ran to meet every new dog you saw and lifted your leg against everything that stuck above the surface, including fishermen’s bags and children’s sand castles.

You barked at passers-by, for the door or gate to be opened or to be helped out of a ditch. You barked at us if we raised our voices or a hand to you, and for joy when you saw we were going to the beach. You howled when you were lovesick but your beautiful barks and howls have now been silenced.

You made a huge space for yourself, deep inside of us, which is now forever empty.

Loved you dearly and miss you so, Big Boy.
